This Unit of Teaching will be offered as an Optional Unit as part of a modular distance learning programme. The programme will allow students to build Certificate, Diploma or Masters level qualifications by combining optional 20 credit units. The Business Management Unit has the following three Elements and their general aims are: -

Element 1. Assessment of your learning practice To review the students’ current practice and their communication, management, learning style, change management and visions, mission & values.

Element 2. Human resource management 1 To provide participants with the knowledge and research into motivation, teambuilding and performance management. Innovation and enterprise.

Element 3. Financial Management Cash flow management, understanding a balance sheet, understanding profit & loss, basic budgeting and ‘what if scenario’s’

Element 4: Understanding Quality. Demming’s principles, the four key concepts, quality in the dental workplace (products, processes, services, patient care) plus monitoring and improving quality.

Intended learning outcomes

Students will by the end of the unit: • Be able to describe how they apply the theories of motivation • Have assessed their Learning styles and have identified their preferred style • Demonstrate the ability to Manage change in the clinical setting • Have evaluated their Management styles and identified its strengths and weaknesses • Have identified their preferred communication style and its impact • Listed key financial control, monitoring, scenario planning, principles of budgeting in professional practice. • Be able to describe the key stages in Quality Management: • Show they can critically appraise of literature related to outcome analysis in business management • Have evaluated how well they communicate with staff and patients

Assessment Details

Each element will have exercises for students to undertake in their workplace to give them feedback on how well they manage topics covered in the element. These exercises are designed to give formative assessment. This Unit will have two summative assessments: - 1. Written in course assignments, MCQs and portfolio activities (50%) 2. Final written examination (50%)

The Unit will be summatively assessed as follows: 1. Written assignment. Each Element will have an assignment of a maximum of 2,500 words related to the content of each of the four elements, MCQs and portfolio activities based on questionnaires designed to gain feedback.The in course assessment will contribute 50% to the element mark. 2. A final written examination comprising Multiple Short Answer questions of 45 minutes’ duration will assess all Elements. The final examination will contribute the remaining 50% of marks for the element mark.
