Element 1: The Dentist in Society

Element 2: Portfolio

The unit aims to provide students with an introduction to social science and communications applicable to dentistry with a specific focus on the needs of different patient groups including children, adults, older people, and those with special care requirements.

Intended learning outcomes

At the end of this unit a successful student will be able to:

  • Describe and summarise aspects of sociological theory that relate to health and illness
  • Discuss demographic factors that are associated with health inequalities
  • Explain the concepts of consent and confidentiality within the context of the Human Rights Act
  • Examine the influence of family and demographic factors on the health care status of an individual and document the results of this examination in a social history report
  • Explain the different methods of learning and teaching available for reflective practice
  • Appreciate the importance of assessment, feedback and critical reflection in dental practice
  • Identify their learning needs and the role of appraisal in personal development planning.

Six lectures, one online tutorial (and seminar to introduce Portfolio)

  • Social History report of 1500 words – 90%.
