This unit is concerned with propagation, including the behaviour of transmission lines and the theory of electromagnetic waves based on Maxwell's equations.


Revision of vector calculus: the gradient, divergence and curl of static electromagnetic field quantites.

Maxwell's equations in time-varying (and time-harmonic) cases; plane waves in lossy and lossless infinite media; wave impedance, skin-depth and power flow.

Transmission line characteristic impedance and the four component equivalent circuit; standing waves, impedance matching and determination of transmission line parameters from simple measurements.

The characteristics of antennas as intentional receivers and transmitters of electromagnetics waves, and brief consideration of unintentional reception and transmission of such waves (an aspect of EMC).

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Explain Maxwell's equations in both time and frequency domain form
  2. Describe the properties of plane waves in lossy media and the behaviour of voltages and currents on unmatched transmission lines.
  3. Calculate quantities such as wave impedance, skin depth, input impedance and VSWR
