Description

The Teaching Unit comprises 3 Elements: 1. Operative/Endodontology/Fixed Prosthodontics 2. Removable Prosthetic Dentistry 3 3. Periodontology 2

Students are introduced to the clinical environment during introductory courses in year 2 on dental assisting and periodontology and then a relatively short clinical introductory course of 3 weeks in year 3 prior to undertaking more general restorative care.

Once these courses have been completed, students are then able to treat their own patients on the Adult Dental Health Clinic (ADH Clinic). During the clinical part of the course, students see there own periodontology patients in year 2 and assist year 4 and 5 students carrying out full restorative care.

In year 3 and the 1st two terms of year 4 they are taught removable prosthodontics incorporating patient's treatment. They also see simple operative and endodontic patients. They are taught all three Restorative disciplines in an integrated fashion.

The main function of ADH Clinic is to provide undergraduate dental students with the opportunity to gain experience across the whole breadth of Restorative Dentistry in an integrated fashion. Although all patient care is integrated, the students are timetabled to ensure they see patients and apportion their time such that appropriate experience is gained in all disciples with specialist as well as general practice supervision and teaching.

During the spring term of year 4, students undertake a further Advanced Restorative Element run by Dr Gordon Gray within the Unit of Restorative 1 (Skills). This introduces more advanced topics and encompasses topics across all the clinical disciplines within Restorative Dentistry. Once this course is completed, students are encouraged to use these skills to treat patients who require advanced restorative work and to prepare a patient for presentation at the final examination.

Intended learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes: Students are expected to carry out a whole range of restorative procedures to the standard expected of a general dental practitioner.

RPD 3 Learning Outcomes: This element is organised in four domains: I. Clinical Information Gathering II. Diagnosis and Treatment Planning III. Prosthetic therapy for partial and complete denture patients IV. Health Promotion: Oral Health and Denture Maintenance

Each domain has its own learning objectives: Domain 1: Clinical Information Gathering Objectives:

  • To be competent at obtaining and recording a complete medical and dental history, interpret the findings and recommend appropriate further investigations, if necessary
  • To be competent at obtaining a detailed history of the patient’s oral and dental state
  • To be competent at performing an extra-oral and intra-oral examination appropriate to the denture patient.

Domain 2: Diagnosis and Treatment Planning Objectives:

  • To be competent in decision – making, clinical reasoning and judgement in order to formulate and record a diagnosis and treatment plan which meets the needs and demands of the denture patient
  • To have knowledge of oral and dental anatomy, including patterns of edentulous ridge resorption
  • To be competent at understanding and applying the biomechanical principles of removable prostheses commonly used to replace missing teeth.

Domain 3: Prosthetic therapy for partial and complete denture patients Objectives:

  • To be competent at designing partial and complete dentures
  • To be reasonably competent at treating and managing partial and complete denture patients
  • To have knowledge of appropriate special techniques used for complete denture construction (e.g. flabby ridge, duplicate, and neutral zone techniques)
  • To have knowledge of materials used for denture construction
  • To have knowledge of common laboratory procedures used in the production of partial and complete dentures.

Domain 4: Health Promotion: Oral Health and Denture Maintenance Objectives:

  • To be competent at providing essential instructions to denture patients regarding oral health and denture maintenance
  • To be competent at managing the existing denture

3.2 Presentation of a denture design to your peers which will be graded by the supervising clinician. (100% of element mark)

3. Element Removable Prosthetic Dentistry 3 Partial dentures (Term 3.3 - 4.1) Complete dentures (Term 4.2) Special techniques (Term 4.2) Integrated Multidisciplinary care (Term 4.3 - 5.2)

5.2 Combined Restorative Joint restorative barrier to finals clinical case scenario presentation and viva. (This mark is included in the Unit not the element mark)

Year 3 OSCE stations - 2 Questions 3.1 Practical Assessment (Pass/Fail)

3. Element Removable Prosthetic Dentistry 3

3.3, 4,1 (Partial Dentures) and 4.2 (Complete Dentures) viva voce examinations outside of clinic to give indication of communication skills, plus ability to recall facts at short notice and to synthesise information on a patient that they have treated (Grade A – E)
