Description including Unit Aims

Anatomy Unit 2 is a continuation of Anatomy Unit 1. Anatomy Unit II is made up of several elements including Head and neck anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Special senses, Locomotor anatomy and Small mammals/exotics (birds, fish, reptiles). All Anatomy Unit 2 elements are examined by spot and viva examination. The pass mark for this unit is 50%. In addition, students must attain an average of 50% in the four summer viva voce exams to be eligible to pass the Unit.

Aims:

To provide students with an understanding of the anatomy of the domestic animals and pet species with emphasis on structures of importance in veterinary medicine and surgery, and on application of knowledge to cadaveric specimens and live animals.

To test the students’ ability to integrate and carry forward knowledge from the previous year; material from both Anatomy Units 1 and II are examined in the sessional vivas.

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the Anatomy II Unit, students should be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy of the head, neck, nervous system, sense organs and limbs in large mammals, and to relate the anatomy to the functions of these regions.
  • Describe the anatomy of all regions of the body in small mammals, birds, fish and reptiles.
  • Use their knowledge of anatomy to examine a patient, diagnosis a medical complaint, interpret radiographs and to select/design possible surgical approaches.
  • Abstract and prioritise anatomical information from diverse sources, and apply it effectively in their future careers.
  • Work Independently and collaboratively in groups to accomplish a given task.

The pass mark for this unit is 50%. In addition, students must attain an average of 50% in the summer viva voce and the spot exams to be eligible to pass the unit.

Students who are "referred" after the summer exam (i.e. those who do not attain the pass mark in Anatomy) may be allowed to take a resit examination, which is held in September. This exam will consist of a spot, and viva voce examinations similar to the Summer (June) exam. DSE marks gained throughout the year will be carried forward to contribute to the resit mark but marks from the midsessional exam will not be carried forward. As a result, the resit spot examination will be somewhat longer and count for more marks than the summer exam.

Resit (September ) Spot all unit II elements 50% Resit (September ) Vivas unit I and II elements 30% DSE (mark carried forwards) 20%
