The Unit aims to build on the previous years’ teaching of The Dentist in Society and to provide students with training in critical appraisal.
Intended Learning Outcomes
The Dentist in Society Year 3
- Explain, evaluate and apply principles of an evidence based approach to learning, clinical and professional practice and decision making
- Explain the principles of epidemiology and critically evaluate their application to patient management
- Discuss the basic principles of a population health approach including demographic and social trends, UK and international oral health trends, determinants of health and inequalities in health, and the ways in which these are currently measured and current patterns
- Describe regulations surrounding the provision of oral health care and the regulation and ethics of research on oral health
- Explain the regulations associated with the use and prescribing of drugs and medication and the safe use of diagnostic equipment
- Demonstrate appropriate written communication in the form of prescriptions for medication and referrals re: secondary care and the safeguarding of children
Critical Appraisal Projects
- Source recent journal articles in a research field, assess their relevance and extract the most relevant material in a new, possibly unfamiliar subject area
- Carefully read and critique a specific research paper, illustrating that you are able to evaluate the work in the context of the research field
- Evaluate your own work and that of others, recognising strengths and areas for improvement
- Demonstrate skills in collaborative writing, integrating information and knowledge provided by different individuals in the team and from different sources
- Illustrate skills in project management, such as prioritising information and activities, working to deadlines, negotiating and co-operating in a team

- Two lectures, one computer session, three tutorials
Assessment Information
1. The Dentist in Society Year 3 Element:
- Formative assessment: feedback from role play sessions (Comm Skills), online self-assessment (required reading) and ordered outcome questions at the end of lectures
- Summative assessment (50%): 60 minute SAQ paper (closed book, 3 compulsory questions 30%), two OSCE stations (written and verbal Communication Skills 20% )
2. Critical Appraisal Projects
- Formative assessment: critical appraisal assignment assessed by tutor and peers
- Summative assessment (30%): assignment (20%), group Wiki (5%), and group PowerPoint presentation (5%)
