Description including Unit Aims

This is a compulsory unit for the DTC students to undertake as part of the 6-month PACT course. The unit is designed to give students experience of a mechanism for creative thinking and problem solving.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Confidence in presenting and articulating ideas in public
  • Introduction to and understanding of the PhD project options on offer

Teaching Information

  • Facilitated Brainstorming sessions (see page 7) of research proposal
  • 20 x 2-3h sessions (40-60h total)

Assessment Information

This group activity will be assessed, real time, by the facilitator (Course Manager) who will provide feedback to the Director. Any deficiencies or gaps in cohort's knowledge that are identified in these sessions will then be corrected in preceding weeks in an active positive feedback loop (eg by providing additional staff workshops if required). The Course Manager will be looking for positive attributes in individuals such as leadership, engagement and interaction with group members. Conversely, the performance of individuals who display low levels of engagement will be discussed with the Director. The Course Manager and Director will prepare brief performance reports on each student which will be made available to the Management Group for the PhD progression decision at the end of PACT. This is a pass/fail compulsory attendance unit.
