Description including Unit Aims

This unit will:

  • provide a critical introduction to the main rites and traditions of Anglican worship found in current practice;
  • examine these rites and traditions within the wider context of the history of Christian worship and of the Church of England;
  • examine practical and theological issues concerning the practice of worship within the mission and ministry of the Church of England today.

Aims:

  • equip students with the knowledge and understanding they will need to competently plan, sensitively lead and creatively develop Anglican worship in future professional ministerial contexts;
  • deepen the students’ critical historical understanding of the rites and practices of the Anglican liturgical tradition;
  • familiarise the students with the options and underlying logic of contemporary Anglican liturgy in the Church of England.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the unit students should:

  • demonstrate a deep familiarity with the currently authorised rites of the Church of England;
  • provide a clear account of the historical development of the main elements of current Anglican liturgical practice;
  • demonstrate informed, creative competence in the planning and leading of currently authorised Anglican liturgy.
  • be able to describe critically the theological features and character of each principal component of Anglican liturgical tradition (eg. in the Eucharist, Baptism, Daily Office, Funeral, Marriage, etc.)
  • show good judgement and depth of knowledge in appropriately applying the different options contained within the Anglican liturgical tradition to various pastoral and social settings.

Teaching Information

Teaching will be through lectures and seminars.

Assessment Information

Formative assessment will be through feedback given by the tutor when observing students’ leadership and team planning of services using Anglican liturgy.

Summative assessment will be through a 1 hour examination.
