This introductory unit has three elements. First, it will provide an overview of the research process, inroduce basic methodological distinctions (e.g. qualitative vs. quantitative, observational and experimental) and examine the link between epistemology and research method. Second, it will explore the scope and distinctiveness of social work research and the role of research in the development and evaluation of policy and practice. Third, it will examine ethical quetions that arise when undertaking research on policy and practice, including research with and for marginalised and oppressed groups.
