Description including Unit Aims

This unit provides basic experience of the design, built and test of structures, analysis of mechanisms and the written and oral communicatoin of engineering information. Aims:

To provide basic experience of the design, build and test of structures, analysis of mechanisms and the written and oral communication of engineering information.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the students will:

  • be able to carry out and clearly document structural design for various structural configurations using a range of analysis methods, working from initial sizing through to preliminary design and gain specific experience of the design, build and test of a small scale semi-monocoque wing box structure based on requirements of geometric envelope, stiffness, strength and stability.
  • understand the function of various types of mechanisms within mechanical and aeronautical systems and be able to apply analytical and graphical methods to kinematics of planar mechanisms and calculate idealised load transfers across complex mechanisms, including aircraft control systems using the principle of virtual work;
  • be able to prepare and deliver verbal presentations on technical material.

Teaching Information

Lectures, example classes, labs.

Assessment Information

100% assessed work including 80% Assessed exercises and assignments (Dr Farrow, wk 16, 20, 24), 15% Assessed Mechanisms exercises (Dr Scarpa) and 5% Assessed Oral Communication Skills exercise (Personal Tutor, wk1-10)
