Your learning on this unit

An overview of content

This unit involves you undertaking an independent project under the supervision of a nominated supervisor. You will conduct an evidence-based project on a topic related to dental implantology. Most students undertake either an evidence-based clinical review or data analysis project. Then you will write and submit a structured Dissertation describing the project and the outcomes and implications of findings from your investigations.

How will students, personally, be different as a result of the unit?

You will demonstrate that you are able to source, understand and critically appraise relevant literature within the field of dental implantology and other related medical and dental disciplines. You will develop skills so that you are able to design and undertake an investigative research project and write a structured Dissertation describing your findings.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the unit you will:

  • Be able to conduct a literature review
  • Be able to design methods to collect and analyse evidence or data as applicable utilising an evidence-based approach on a topic related to dental implantology
  • Be able to present their your work academically and scientifically in the form of a Dissertation

How you will learn

Teaching:

You will be required to attend Dissertation meetings and agree a written proposal to be approved by the unit lead.

Progress Monitoring:

There will be regular Dissertation meetings between you and the project supervisor, either online or in person. Regular cumulative targets will be agreed and recorded. You must meet your supervisor within weeks 1-6 of Year 3 and submit a written proposal to the Unit Director by week 12 of Year 3.

How you will be assessed

You must submit a full draft of their dissertation two months before the final deadline to allow for timely feedback that they can act on ahead of the final submission.

Tasks which count towards your unit mark (summative):

A written Dissertation including a literature review (100%)

When assessment does not go to plan

If you do not pass the unit, you may be given the opportunity to resubmit your work depending on the mark you have achieved and as per the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. DENTM9019).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the University Workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. For appropriate assessments, if you have self-certificated your absence, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (for assessments at the end of TB1 and TB2 this is usually in the next re-assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any exceptional circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
