Description including Unit Aims
Open to MB ChB students only.
Intended Learning Outcomes
- Take record and present a relevant history, including drug history.
- Examine a patient and elicit, demonstrate and interpret common physical signs.
- Demonstrate an adequate knowledge base and an ability to use this knowledge to guide your history taking and examination.
- Integrate the history and physical findings to construct a working diagnosis.
- Formulate plans for investigation and treatment of the core clinical problems in the light of the available evidence base, including drug therapy for common indications.
- Diagnose and understand principles of management of acute medical emergencies.
- Demonstrate an ability to communicate diagnosis and management plan to patients and elicit and respond appropriately to patient’s questions about their care, including assessment of their understanding and capacity to give consent.
- Develop skills with common clinical procedures.
- Demonstrate a professional attitude.
- Demonstrate an ability to research clinical problems and understand application of the findings of this research to clinical management.
- Demonstrate an ability to communicate clinical findings to patients and other health care professionals both in clinical and academic settings.

Assessment Information
Clinical Component Assessment
- Clerking portfolio (20% of component mark) The clerking portfolio is a written document of 32 cases seen by students during their attachment which is marked according to set guidelines
- Objective Long Case (40% of component mark) The long case is an observed clerking of a patient by senior clinicians comprising of two summative long cases assessed on standard pro forma by trained examiners and a third long case to be examined by 2 examiners if competence not demonstrated by OLC 2.
