Description including Unit Aims

This unit focuses on the sales contract which forms the foundation for international trade in commodities. The unit has two central components. First, it considers the English law on international sales, and in particular the elaboration, since Victorian times, of specific and detailed rules governing the differing types of export and import terms, such as CIF and FOB contracts. The second component of the unit considers international measures aimed at harmonizing rules on international sales, principally the Vienna Convention on the International Sale of Goods 1980 (CISG), together with UNIDROIT Principles of International Commercial Contracts and the INCOTERMS 2000 promulgated by the International Chamber of Commerce. This component of the unit will provide an opportunity for students to undertake an independent Internet-based research.
