Description including Unit Aims

This unit will cover five core components:

  • The auditing profession and associated regulation and reports;
  • Key auditing concepts;
  • Selected tests for accounting cycles;
  • Computer-aided auditing techniques; and
  • The underlying theoretical framework of auditing.

Aims:

By the end of the unit, students will have:

  • An understanding of the auditing profession and current issues affecting it;
  • Knowledge of fundamental auditing concepts and the underpinning theoretical framework;
  • Key skills required to conduct, interpret and understand some key auditing procedures;
  • Used and analysed the potential for computer aided auditing techniques.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain key auditing concepts;
  2. Understand, conduct and interpret key auditing procedures;
  3. Interpret audit reports;
  4. Critically evaluate issues affecting the auditing profession;
  5. Improve analytical and report writing skills.

Teaching Information

Lectures, tutorials and practice in computer lab.

Assessment Information

Summative:

2-hour close book exam (Learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4) 65%

Coursework (Learning outcomes 1, 4, 5) 35%

In addition there will be ongoing formative homework exercises to consolidate knowledge each week after lectures and to work through during tutorials and computer exercises.
