Description including Unit Aims
This unit introduces the student to subjects of Dental Public Health and Behavioural Sciences with relevance to the care of the patient.
The unit aims are:
- To provide the student with the tools to gain an understanding of the social and behavioural issues that influence dental health and disease
- To provide the student with a sound basis for providing information and advice on the main aspects of oral health
Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this unit the student will:
- Have knowledge of communication with patients, other members of the dental team and other health professionals.
- Have knowledge of social, cultural and environment factors that determine oral health and illness.
- Have knowledge of the prevalence and distribution of certain dental conditions in the UK and the provision of dental services for a community taking into account the changing demography of the population.
- Be familiar with the social and psychological issues relevant to the care of patients
- Have knowledge of the role of the dental team in the facilitation, provision and care of disabled people.
- Be familiar with the medical and social models of disability and the resulting consequences and impact on the lives of people with disabilities.
- Be familiar with an evidence-based approach to treatment.

Summative
Open book essay on the care of the elderly. This essay has a word count of 2000 and the pass mark is 50%.
Formative
2 hour formative written paper on prevention including social, cultural and environment factors that determine oral health and illness.
