Unit Information

This unit provides students with a practice placement of 100 days, in an agency setting, supervised and assessed by a suitably qualified and experienced practice educator. Placements in the region are managed on a cooperative basis involving key HEIs and placement agencies. Students’ practice is assessed according to the Professional Capabilities Framework (BASW) which is designed to enable an holistic assessment of student capabilities. This is taken together with the Professional standards set out by Social Work England (SWE). Placements are monitored and evaluated via established arrangements for quality assurance.

There will also be a transitional workshop preparing students for the move to employment as a registered social worker, via the formal Assessed and Supported Year in Employment.

The unit aims to:

1) Provide students with a practice placement in a social work context, managed and assessed according to the Professional Capabilities Framework.(BASW 2018).This is taken together with the Professional standards (SWE)

2) Enable students to demonstrate that they have met fully, and at a level suitable for registration the relevant components of the Professional Capabilities Framework social workers together with the Professional standards(SWE).

How you will learn

Lectures, practice development groups, 100 days practice based learning supervised and assessed by a suitably qualified practice assessor, with support from a University tutor.

How you will be assessed

A Practice analysis (6000 words) marked by the University tutor provides the recorded mark for the unit. A portfolio of work from the practice placement will be assessed on a pass / fail basis. All elements of assessment must be passed for the award of unit credits.Students’ practice on placement will be assessed by the practice educator in consultation with a University tutor and other relevant people who may be involved with the placement. Extensive guidance on assessment of the placement is found in the Practice learning handbook.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. SPOLM5107).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
