This unit comprises the induction to the Year in Industry. The aim of the unit is to provide an induction to the industrial research setting that will prepare students for the research project to be undertaken during the industrial placement. Generic skills will be developed within the industrial context, including: laboratory skills commensurate with those expected by industry; Health and Safety awareness; IT and scientific communication skills. A written literature review pertinent to the proposed project will introduce the student to the background of the project and a project plan will familiarise the student with the aims of the research to be carried out.
The student will have developed an understanding of the background to the proposed industrial project and an understanding of its aims.
Company training programs (safety, animal handling, IT, language courses, etc.); research seminars and research group meetings. The student will, in parallel, write an introductory research literature review and project plan as an introduction to the proposed project.
A 2000-word Literature Review Essay (70%) reviewing the scientific background to the proposed research. It assesses the student's understanding of the background literature. A Project Plan (30%) consisting of a bullet point summary of the main aims of the project and how they will be achieved.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
