Description including Unit Aims

The unit explores a range of visual art practices in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Europe, focusing on specific case studies. The art of the era is explored in relation to the cultural, social and political contexts of its production and reception. Emergent ideas of modernism will be interrogated in relation to avant-garde practices and debates. Students will be expected to engage with primary textual and visual sources and critique historiographic approaches to art and wider visual culture.

Intended Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate knowledge of a range of visual practices in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Europe;
• analyse and draw conclusions about the significance of developments in European Modern art;
• select pertinent evidence/data in order to illustrate/demonstrate more general issues and arguments;
• identify a particular academic interpretation, evaluate it critically, and form an individual viewpoint.

1 x two-hour informal lecture and 1 x one-hour seminar per week

How much time the unit requires

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
