Description including Unit Aims

An introductory unit designed for those who have little or no previous knowledge of Latin, and aiming to teach students the techniques of reading straightforward Latin texts with the aid of a dictionary and reference grammar. They will later apply their knowledge of the language to the analysis of a text relevant to their area of research.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will understand and be able to apply some fundamental rules of Latin grammar. They will memorise at least 250 words of Latin vocabulary. They will be able to translate simple sentences from English to Latin.

Teaching will include lectures, interactive exercises and drills, and revision of daily homework assignments

Assessment Information

Assessment by one 45 min class test and one 90 min exam weighted 25% and 50%, plus one practical criticism exercise of 2,500 words (25%).

Reading and References
