This module will introduce concepts relating to the planning and construction of implant supported fixed prostheses. Abutment types and implant positions to support a fixed prosthesis will be examined. The choice of fixed prosthesis material and impression taking for fixed prostheses will also be examined.
Lectures and small group teaching on Unit 5 study day. Distance learning package delivered via Blackboard including additional ‘podcast’ lectures/videos and directed reading. This unit runs concurrently with the Clinical Practice attachment Unit and is closely linked with it, teaching is therefore supplemented by one to one teaching and observation of clinical practice.
Formative assessment
During the study day via direct verbal feedback, particularly during hands on techniques demonstrations.
Summative Assessments
Written assignments:
1. Clinical prosthodontic techniques - fixed. Written assignment looking at clinical techniques involved in the provision of fixed prosthodontic solutions.
2. A patient assessment with models, photographs and relevant clinical information will be presented from which a written treatment plan will be presented for a fixed implant prosthesis. The plan will need to include implant selection, proposed implant positions and prosthesis design, along with abutment choice and material selection for the prosthesis
Total 100% of unit marks.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
