Comic Drama 1550 - 1789. This unit will cover a wide range of comic texts, exploring how and why dramatists of the period sought to make people (the general public, the intelligentsia and the court) laugh. In investigating this, account will be taken of contemporary and more recent theories of the comic (Corneille, Moliere, Diderot, Beaumarchais, Bergson, Bakhtine, etc.).
Successful students will:
Two seminar hours per week across one teaching block
One 3000-word essay plus 3-hour exam (33%/ 67%)
