Description including Unit Aims

The unit aims to develop skills for conducting a thorough investigation into a computer science problem, and to provide an understanding of the issues involved in documenting and presenting the results.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Successful completion of the unit will enable you to:

  • familiarise yourself with a research area, and perform a literature search;
  • formulate objectives of the investigation;
  • work independently and apply professional skills;
  • integrate relevant existing tools and algorithms;
  • be innovative in a scientific or technical sense;
  • present your results in a convincing way, both in writing and verbally.

Teaching Information

You proceed on the project under the guidance of your supervisor. The nominal load is 400 hours. The load in each semester depends on your spread of options. If you are taking 4 units in each semester, the load for your project is 16.7 hours per week, and you should have finished half of your project by January. If you are taking 5 units in one semester and 3 in the other, the average weekly project load is 8.3 hours in one semester and 25 hours in the other; your January progress should be in line with this.
