The dissertation is an essay of 6,500 to 8,000 words on a subject of a student's choice that has been agreed by the Unit Director. Students choosing to write a dissertation will meet regularly with an adviser for discussion of preparatory reading and research, work in progress, and drafts etc.
Aims:
This unit aims to allow a student to undertake independent research, and to write an extended essay of 6,500 to 8,000 words on a subject of their choice (to be agreed with the Unit Director). The dissertation aims to allow a student to develop their research, writing, and critical reading skills, and may be of particular relevance to students who are considering postgraduate study.
The student will have had an opportunity to undertake independent research, writing an extended essay on a subject of their choice. This mode of work should normally allow a student to develop their research, writing, and critical reading skills and their confidence in working independently.
The dissertation is principally undertaken through independent study. The student will normally meet regularly with an adviser for discussion up to a maximum of four hours through the unit.
The unit will be assessed through submission of an essay of 6,500 to 8,000 words (including quotations and notes, excluding bibliography) on a subject of the student's choice that has been agreed by the Unit Director.
