Description including Unit Aims

This unit will introduce the principles of linguistics and their application to the analysis of sign languages. Students will cover the structure of a broad range of researched sign languages, with particular emphasis on BSL. This unit will encompass the central aspects of sign linguistics traditionally covered by phonology, morphology and syntax, while also placing our understanding of sign languages within the broader context of spoken languages. Students will undertake analyses of sign language texts to support the theoretical aspects of the course.
