No Roman writer matches Ovid in the persistence and extent of his influence on subsequent literature and art. Exploring Ovid’s influence upon literature, art history, and film, this unit will track — and seek to explain — that influence. We will revisit a selection of Ovid’s most infamous characters (Narcissus, Orpheus, Philomela, Actaeon – among others) and examine their afterlives in Shakespeare, Picasso, Cocteau – and beyond.
• On successful completion of this unit students will have (1) developed a detailed knowledge and in-depth understanding of a canonical classical writer’s influence upon literature, art history, and film. (2) further refined skills in reading and critically evaluating ancient literary texts. (3) further refined skills in reading and critically analysing early modern and modern works of classical reception. (4) demonstrated the ability to identify and critically evaluate pertinent evidence/data in order to illustrate/demonstrate a cogent argument.
20 hours (lectures)
