Description including Unit Aims

To provide an introduction to the basic principles, tools, and skills required for engineering design and use of computers, assuming no prior knowledge of either subject. To introduce the principles and processes used in designing, integrating and procuring contemporary aerospace vehicles; understanding the standards necessary in presenting the general arrangement (three-view) and interior layouts of aerospace vehicle design concepts.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to:

  • interpret and present graphical information; create 3D solid object models and engineering drawings using CAD; create CAD three-view aircraft representations with associated principal dimensional/parametric data.
  • demonstrate knowledge of basic design principles of aircraft.
  • apply knowledge and understanding of Aerodynamics, Performance, Stability & Control and Structures in order to design a model flight vehicle; manufacture, test and measure the performance of the flight vehicle; produce documentation and reports to clearly define the design and explain performance.
  • use computer programming and spreadsheets for basic engineering tasks.

Teaching Information

Lectures, laboratories, example classes, programming exercises.
