Description including Unit Aims

This module enables the student to link applied pharmacology to clinical practice and to understand the implications of prescribing drugs for medically compromised patients whom they may be managing.

The control of pain and anxiety is fundamental to the practice of dentistry and requires an awareness of the social and psychological needs of the individual patient. Student dental hygienists should be able to understand the suitability of the various methods of managing and controlling anxiety and should be capable of selecting the most appropriate behavioural method to manage an individual patients anxiety.

This module includes the indications for analgesia and anaesthesia and practical teaching on local analgesia.

By the end of the programme student dental hygienists should be competent to administer local infiltration analgesia and inferior dental regional block analgesia and have been trained in the management of the complications which may arise in the application of such methods of pain control. Students should have a basic knowledge of other techniques used for controlling pain in dentistry.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Be familiar with the role of therapeutics in the management of patients requiring medication as an integral part of their oral care.
  • Be competent in the theory of administration of local infiltration and inferior dental block analgesia.
  • Be familiar with the dental application of drugs in the control of pain and anxiety.
  • Be familiar with alternative methods of pain and anxiety control.

Teaching Information

  • Lecture
  • Small group teaching

Assessment Information

  • Students are initially assessed formatively with written tests and OSCEs to determine their theoretical knowledge of topics in this unit.
  • Students must then complete a total of 20 supervised local anaesthetics injections to their patients before being allowed to administer LA to patients without direct supervision from a tutor.
  • Students clinical competency is continually assessed for the duration of the course.
  • Students are also assessed summatively on the topics in this unit at the End of Year and Final Examinations.
