This 10-credit unit is specifically designed for the new MA Chinese-English Audiovisual Translation. The unit will introduce students to key theories and concepts in the field of audiovisual translation. It will run alongside, and complement, the existing Theories of Translation which students on this programme will also take. The concepts covered in this unit will function as a theoretical introduction to the more practical units in TB2.
The unit aims
To familiarise students with the concepts, theories and methodological frameworks for audiovisual translation. It will include coverage of key modes of audiovisual translation; will require students to engage critically with key relevant theories; and will provide an orientation to the latest research in the field.
At the end of this unit, the student will be able to:
1. demonstrate knowledge of key concepts in audiovisual translation
2. analyse critically an authentic example of an audiovisual text and its translated version
3. reflect critically on recent changes in the audiovisual translation industry
Teaching will be delivered online through a combination of synchronous sessions and asynchronous activities, including seminars, lectures, and collaborative as well as self-directed learning opportunities supported by tutor consultation.
The assessment will be a critical analysis of an audiovisual text and its authentic translated version, drawing on appropriate concepts and theoretical frameworks. Weighting: 100%. LOs: 1-3

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
