Description including Unit Aims

This is a mandatory 60 cp unit for both the 180 cp MRes programme in Functional Nanomaterials, and of the MSc in Nanoscience and Functional Nanomaterials. It will be an independent research project of 5 months duration, building on earlier taught and practical training allowing students to hone and refine independent research skills.

Aims The overarching aim of the unit is for the student to develop independent research skills. Additionally, the students will put into practice the interdisciplinary research acumen acquired throughout other parts of the programmes.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The student will undertake an original research project and will be able to:

  • design experiments;
  • demonstrate time management skills
  • plan a personal research project;
  • apply techniques necessary for experiments;
  • analyse data and propose theories for experimental observations
  • write-up work for reporting purposes

Supervised independent research project.

Assessment Information

Formative assessment will be given by the project supervisory team after one month of the project when the student will submit a 1,000 word literature survey and outline research plan for the remainder of the project. Summative assessment will be by Thesis (6,000-10,000 words), as outlined in the University guidelines on taught programmes ( Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
