Description including Unit Aims

In this module, final year keyboard students (whether piano, harpsichord, organ) will develop their skills as accompanists.

By the end of the module, students will:

  • have developed their ability to sightread fluently under pressure
  • have developed their rehearsal technique to a level appropriate for a final-year Music student
  • have attained a level of technical skill appropriate to Level H so that they can fluently accompany a formal recital, responding sensitively to another performer in real time.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  1. be able to sightread a moderately complex piece
  2. fluently accompany another player
  3. constructively lead a rehearsal with a soloist, so that the performance is significantly improved by the end of the rehearsal period
  4. successfully accompany a formal 10 minute recital (prepared)

Teaching Information

Group coaching in accompaniment skills (seminar based) 11 x 2-hour workshops throughout the year

Weekly departmental concerts, demonstrating good practice to the students (22 hours across the year)

44 hours of participation in departmentally-run choirs or ensembles (Symphony Orchestra, University Singers, or Choral Society)

Assessment Information

Sightreading exercise, accompanying a soloist (25%) (ILOs 1 and 2); assessed 20-minute rehearsal (25%) (ILOs 2 and 3); assessed formal recital of 10 minutes (50%) (ILOs 2 and 4). Repertoire choice must be equivalent to the performance level of MUSI30061/MUSI30066

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.
