Description including Unit Aims

This is a two-week pre-sessional course for pre-undergraduate students in any Engineering discipline. Students will spend around half their time in the Engineering labs working on two multi-disciplinary design and build projects, and the remaining time in the classroom, working on Engineering-specific academic language and literacies. The course has been designed through close collaboration between CELFS (the Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies) and the Faculty of Engineering, ensuring an integrated approach to the learning of content and language.

Aims:

  • to improve students' command of general and Engineering-specific academic English
  • to develop the academic literacies and study skills necessary to succeed as Engineering undergraduates at the University of Bristol
  • to develop students’ abilities to successfully engage with Engineering-specific writing and speaking tasks: proposals and presentations
  • to develop effective collaboration in group-based practical projects in the Engineering lab
  • to enable students to use feedback and reflection to improve future academic work

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Unpack specifications for a design & build project
  • Collaborate effectively and safely on Engineering design & build projects in labs
  • Use language for planning, negotiating and testing design choices in small groups
  • Use language for justifications and explanations in a written proposal and oral presentation
  • Reflect on peer and tutor feedback to improve future work
