Description including Unit Aims

This is a mandatory 10cp unit which forms part of the 180cp MRes in Advanced Composites. It will introduce the fundamental aspects of nanomaterials in terms of materials properties, characterisation, processing, modelling and engineering applications.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Understand what nanomaterials are and their unique properties
  • Be able to associate a particular materials with characterisation and processing techniques
  • Be able to understand the principles of nanomechanics and the relationship between atomistic and continuum models
  • Be able to appreciate issues associated with nanomaterials and their applications.
