Description including Unit Aims

This Unit will:

  • give students the tools to understand some of the main current debates in development economics
  • cover both theory and evidence
  • cover the following themes:

Unit aims are:

  • To provide an up-to-date introduction to key economic issues facing developing countries

To help prepare students for careers in development policy with public and non-governmental organisations (both national and international)

Intended Learning Outcomes

To equip students with the analytical apparatus needed to assess alternative policy measures directed at improving macroeconomic performance of developing countries.

Teaching Information

Weekly lectures and fortnightly small group tutorials

Assessment Information

Summative assessment: Three-hour closed book examination in summer term: 100%. The examination will test the ability of students to critically analyse a range of policy measures designed at improving macroeconomic performance in developing countries,

Formative assessment: Each student will submit one essay, randomly distributed from a set of five questions.
