This Unit of Teaching will be offered as an Optional Unit as part of a modular distance learning programme. The programme will allow students to build Certificate, Diploma or Masters level qualifications by combining optional 20 credit units. The Periodontology Unit has the following four Elements and their general aims are: -
Element 1. Introduction and histopathogenesis
To provide the students with the underpinning knowledge and skills to understand the aetiology and pathology of the 5 types of periodontal disease.
Element 2. Diagnosis and Treatment planning
To provide the students with the underpinning knowledge and clinical skills to diagnose and treatment plan periodontal patients
Element 3. Hygiene Phase therapy
To provide the students with the underpinning knowledge to carry out effective hygiene phase treatment on patients with periodontal disease
Element 4. Maintenance Phase Therapy
To provide the students with the underpinning knowledge and clinical skills to carry out periodontal maintenance therapy

This Unit will have the following five summative assessments: -
1. Element 1. Online assignment (15%)
2. Element 2. Reflective case study (15%)
3. Element 3. Online assignment (15%)
4. Element 4. Online assignment (15%)
5. A final written examination comprising Multiple Short Answer questions of 2 hours’ duration (40%)
This unit includes an extra assessment as the failure to diagnose and manage periodontal problems is one of the biggest causes of complaints to the professional regulator. The extra assessment will ensure that the University can demonstrate that the candidates have the required knowledge in this area.

Element 1. The classification, histopathology and immunology of periodontal disease (25% of total Unit mark)

• Online assignments (length 1 500 words) (30% of element mark)
• Element component of final Unit written examination comprising Multiple Short Answer questions (70% of element mark)
Element 2. Diagnosis and Treatment planning (25% of total Unit mark)

• Reflective case study (2 500 words) and online assignments (1 500 words) will contribute 30% to the final Element mark
• Element component of final Unit written examination comprising Multiple Short Answer questions (70% of Element mark)
