Description including Unit Aims

A continuation of Level 1 Grade 2. This units aims to further the acquisition and consolidation of general language structures and vocabulary, and the development of communication skills required to function effectively in an international professional environment. The unit will include: tuition in general language, work related skills (i.e. negotiating in the target language, job applications, etc.), preparing and giving presentations, familiarisation with social and cultural aspects of the target language, cross-cultural development. Students will be expected to complete an extensive project in the target language.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able:

  1. to produce accurate and fluent spoken and written language in a variety of registers;
  2. to understand written and spoken language studied at an upper-intermediate / lower advanced level and
  3. to demonstrate skills that can be put into practice if they spend time abroad in a country where the language is spoken.

Overall, students will attain a level comparable to C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Teaching Information

3 hours of teaching per week covering all four topics of Reading writing speaking and listening. Classroom based learning is supplemented by online access to resources delivered via Blackboard. Regular formative homework is set.

Assessment Information

The four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) are assigned equal weighting for the purposes of assessment (25% each). For reading there is a formal examination in the summer examination period, which comprises 25% of the total mark. This assesses ILOs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Writing is assessed by a coursework assignment, which comprises 25% of the total mark, and is completed over the course of TB1 and TB2. This assesses ILOs 1, 2, 3 and 5.

Listening is assessed by continuous assessment, consisting of listening assignments and class tests, which comprise 25% of the total mark. Both assess ILOs 1 and 2.

Speaking is tested by continuous assessment, which comprises 25% of the total mark. It consists of marked coursework (oral presentation at the end of TB1, - assessing ILOs 1, 2 and 3) and an oral exam at the end of TB2 (assessing ILOs 1, 2 and 3).
