This unit aims to allow students to undertake a special author study, examining a range of writings by one writer under the supervision of an adviser. Students will produce an extended essay arising out of this work, of up to 5000 words.
Aims:
The special author study aims to allow students to work more independently than in other units completed thus far. It also aims to help students who wish to consider undertaking a dissertation acquire relevant skills and practices: for example, how to plan and structure a longer discussion and how to assemble a wide range of appropriate critical or other materials.
Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to demonstrate
1) the ability to plan and conduct in-depth independent research
2) the ability to design a research project based around a single author
3) the ability to communicate their ideas effectively
4) the ability to present a persuasive written argument
This unit will be delivered through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous delivery. The teaching on ths unit will include mini lectures, small group discussions practical activities supported by tutorials, small group activities supported by practical activities , formative tasks and self-directed learning.
1 x 1000 word formative thesis, outlining the intended line of argument for the essay.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
