Unit Information

The unit will provide a structured and supervised opportunity for final year students to either pursue an industrial placement in a professional context related to film and television, or to undertake a film or television related commission for an external client.

In many cases, students will choose and arrange their own placements (subject to approval by the unit convenor) with support and guidance from the Department of Film and Television. In other instances, students may apply for either a) a placement that has been organised by the Department, or b) selection as part of a group allocated to meeting with and fulfilling a commission for an external client organisation. For all placements, however obtained, the student will conduct appropriate tasks under the guidance of a nominated mentor from the host organization and under the supervision of the department. For client commissioned projects, the Department will act as mentor and supervisor for the student but will solicit feedback from the client as to the group’s ability to manage professional negotiations and fulfil the requirements of the brief.

Placements and client commissions will vary but each is expected to require between 75 to 100 hours of work in an industrial setting or for an industrial client. In all instances, the unit mark will be informed by the mentor or client report and assessed on the basis of a 3000 word reflexive account which reflects on and engages with the placement and/or issues closely linked to it.

The unit aims:

· To provide the opportunity for students to extend their knowledge and experience of the discipline by working in an appropriate host organization under the guidance of a mentor, or in consultation with a client from that organization;

· To enable students to develop and apply appropriate knowledges and skills within a professional setting;

· To provide the opportunity for students to extend their knowledge and experience of the discipline through independent study and practical activity.

Your learning on this unit

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. complete an agreed period of employment within a professional industrial setting related to film and/or television or to use film and television related skills to work for an industrial client;

2. communicate effectively in interpersonal settings and in writing;

3. work productively and collaborative with others as required, demonstrating the ability to contribute to team work and take independent initiative;

4. engage closely at an advanced level with how creative industries function practically and within wider cultural and artistic contexts;

5. consider and evaluate their own work in a reflexive manner, with detailed reference to academic and professional issues, debates and conventions;

6. evaluate, draw upon and effectively deploy a range of sources and conceptual frameworks that illuminate and develop an understanding of professional work related to film and/or television.

How you will learn

Seminars and/or group or individual supervision sessions.

How you will be assessed

Assessment will be assessed primarily on the basis of the written element whilst also considering the report supplied by the mentor from the host organization or the industrial client.

The written element will take the form of a 3000 word reflexive account (100%), extending the student's exploration of an aspect of industry practice experienced on the placement.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. FATV30008).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
