Description including Unit Aims

Students will devise and plan an original programme of research, which they will present in the form of a standard grant proposal, of the type required by UK funding bodies, and an oral examination. The unit aims to encourage students to develop an original research question through in depth investigation of the field of study, using the scientific literature. In doing this they will develop an understanding of the process of devising a coherent and specific scientific research programme.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the unit:

• Students will demonstrate the ability to critically review, consolidate and extend a systematic and coherent body of knowledge
• Students will demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate concepts and evidence from a range of sources; transfer and apply diagnostic and creative skills and exercise significant judgement in a range of situations; and accept accountability for determining and achieving personal outcomes.
• Students will display mastery of complex and specialised area of knowledge and skills related to their research area, demonstrating understanding of the use of advanced technical skills to conduct research.

Students will display the ability to be able to present and defend their ideas in oral and written forms for both scientific and lay audiences.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
