This unit is an optional 10-credit unit offered as part of the Learning, English and Academic Development provision for current students. It is designed for students who have met the University’s minimum English language entry requirements and wish to further develop their competence in reading and writing in English for academic purposes at C1 / C2 level.
In terms of reading, students will develop skills that enable them to more effectively evaluate texts according to their research purposes, to navigate useful texts efficiently, and to extract key information from them.
In terms of their writing, students will develop a better understanding of the features of academic English generally, and the forms it takes in different subjects. Students will apply this understanding to their own writing producing texts that summarise their reading, synthesising evidence, examples and opinion into an original text.
There is a focus on the requirements and expectations of study in the UK higher education, both in terms of gathering information and making use of it, demonstrating critical thinking, creativity and originality of thought.
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Read academic texts efficiently, effectively and evaluatively
2. Manage the knowledge acquired through reading so as to contribute effectively to future study
3. Summarise and synthesise their knowledge into an original text that demonstrates critical thinking
4. Produce a text that exhibits the features and follows the conventions of academic English for the appropriate audience and purpose
5. Produce a text that demonstrates a clear stance in relation to other texts, incorporating sources and evidence to support that stance
Combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions based on Blackboard VLE involving practical task-based work.
Summative assessments:
Short Answer Questions: Critical Response to a Set Text, 200-250 words, (50%) [ILOs 1, 2, 3, 4]
Short Comparative Critical Response, 500 words, (50%) [ILOs 1, 2, 4, 5]

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours
of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks,
independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit.
The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an
assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates
within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
