Description including Unit Aims

This unit will enable students to pursue a defined and focused specialist philosophical interest working independently under the guidance of a member of academic staff.

Students will undertake their research independently, guided by a supervisor, and will produce a 6,000 word essay.

Through this unit, students have the opportunity to explore particular topics not available in taught units or in more depth than is offered in a taught unit. This thus allows for greater flexibility to respond to students' special interests.

Aims:

This unit will enable students to:

• Conduct a small-scale independent research project into the chosen philosophical topic or issue.
• Structure their patterns of study independently
• Produce a 6,000 word essay, or another assignment of comparable academic weight, as agreed with the supervisor and unit director.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit students will have:

1. Developed sophisticated knowledge and understanding of the chosen philosophical topic or issue.
2. Demonstrated the ability to critically assess and reflect on the relevant issues in the chosen area.
3. Structured their own independent patterns of study.
4. Demonstrated the ability to clearly present and communicate their research.
5. Demonstrated research skills with a sophistication appropriate to level M/7.

Teaching Information

Individual tutorials (normally 3 hours in total over the duration of the unit); guided reading; independent study and research.

Assessment Information

6,000 word essay or another assignment of comparable academic weight, as agreed with the supervisor (100%)

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
