Unit Information

This is one of two independent research units for the Quantum Engineering centre for doctoral training, of approximately four months duration. Students will choose projects that have been vetted as appropriate to quantum engineering from proposals submitted by potential supervisors. They are encouraged to expand their horizons with one of the two projects (e.g. a theory project for an experimentalist). It is possible that one could grow into a PhD project.

Your learning on this unit

The main purpose of this unit is to foster independent research skills. Other outcomes include:

  • The development of specific experimental or theoretical techniques involved in the projects.
  • The development of time and project management skills.
  • The ability to write technical scientific documents.
  • The ability to communicate scientific results.

How you will be assessed

Formative assessment will consist of a progress review outlining the student’s research plan to be completed within the first month, assessed by the supervisor.

Summative assessment will depend on the student’s assessment choice for the mandatory Research Project A (PHYSM0017) module, and will take the form of either an approximately 30 minute-long presentation to be given to the cohort or a report of approximately 3000 words.

Across both modules, every student has to be assessed by means of both a presentation and a report. Assessment will be 50% by the supervisor, 25% by a second assessor (from the QE-CDT academic staff), and 25% by a third assessor (from the academic pool at the University not excluding the QE-CDT staff).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
