Description including Unit Aims

This unit will be a project-based unit with some early lecture-based teaching, assessed entirely through coursework. Students will be set a design task of an electro-mechanical system (such as design of a heat sink). This projects unit reinforces the concepts covered by other units, rather than introducing new material.

Working in small groups (2/3 students per group) each group will be required produce design calculations for the problem set and then manufacture and validate this design.

Students will then be required to submit a joint report and individual lab books and this will form the basis of the assessment.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Having completed this course, students should be able to:

  1. Use previous taught theory to interpret a requirements statement and come up with design specifications
  2. Keep accurate records of the laboratory work
  3. Model the electro-mechanical process in an appropriate manner
  4. Manufacture and design to an appropriate standard
  5. Take appropriate measurements, and analyse results
  6. Explain limitations of their designs, compromises on cost, performance and complexity

Teaching Information

Introductory lectures, followed by lab-based small group teaching. (Dynamic learning manuals may be considered).

Assessment Information

Students will then be required to submit a joint group report and individual lab books and this will form the basis of the assessment.

  • Individual laboratory notebook, 35% (ILOs 1, 2, 4)
  • Online quiz, 15% (ILO 1 and 3)

Group report, 50% (ILO 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
