This unit will offer students who have made some start with writing and/or storytelling for children (informally or on a prior course) an opportunity to develop new skills and to consider and compare different genres of writing for children. There will be a particular emphasis on re-drafting and editing work.
Students will have had an opportunity (i) to contextualize their earlier practice in writing and/or storytelling for children; (ii) to gain literary skills, by comparing different genres of writing; and (iii) to re-draft and edit their own work. Students will also (iv) be offered guidance within the unit on how they might continue their studies beyond it.
Seminars
This unit is designed to be comparable to the BA English Literature and Community Engagement in assessment methods, which (iv) therefore mirror those on 10-credit units within that programme. Assessment for this unit is normally undertaken through a short piece of creative writing of between 1,500 and 2,000 words, which will include a brief (up to 500 word) commentary reflecting on how the work relates to their earlier practice (i), why they have chosen a particular genre to work in (ii) and how the work has developed in response to earlier drafts (iii).
