This unit, taught by a Russian native speaker, provides students with A-Level Russian or equivalent the opportunity to explore in depth aspects of contemporary Russia through the media. These aspects will be chosen in consultation with students, but might include the media in Russia, rich and poor in Russia, Russia and democracy, Russia’s relations with its neighbours, Russia and terrorism, Moscow, Petersburg and the regions etc. Through presentations and written work, students will compare and contrast the perceptions of Russia in its own and in overseas media, coming to a greater understanding of the issues affecting Russia today and how the media reflects them.
Students will have a more in-depth familiarity with the Russian media and with the preoccupations of contemporary Russian society as they are reflected in its media. They will have developed their passive understanding of the language of the contemporary media. They will have developed their oral and written presentation skills through the preparation and delivery of extended pieces of work, exploring the treatment of a particular issue in the media.

1 x weekly seminar. Students will be required to do a substantial amount of advanced preparation and reading for each class.
