Description including Unit Aims

The unit introduces the concept of modern control systems, introduces state-space modelling of systems and links the state-space approach with familiar, classical methods used for describing systems based on the 2nd year control course. Digital control will be introduced into the state-space formulation and then also related to classical methods. Further, the design of feedback controlled systems using linear state feedback is studied for both continuous and digital systems.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Having completed the unit, students will be able to:

  • Explain the need for discrete control systems
  • Apply classical control techniques to discrete control system analysis and design
  • Derive, analyse and manipulate SISO state space systems
  • Determine the stability, controllability and observability of SISO state space systems
  • Apply state variable feedback to SISO systems
  • Compare the benefits and limitations of these techniques over other classical methods
  • Use CAD (Matlab and Simulink) tools to analyse and develop controllers.
