Description including Unit Aims

An introduction to and overview of major areas/themes in the discipline of Hispanic and Latin American studies, for example an author, a literary genre or period, a significant historical event or movement.

Aims:

  • To provide an introduction to and overview of major areas/themes in the discipline of Hispanic and Latin American studies.
  • To introduce students to key concepts and methods in the study of aspects of the historiesy, literatures and cultures of Spain and Latin America.
  • To familiarise students with the use of English translation versions of primary sources selected from across the periods covered by this unit.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will have acquired a basic knowledge of a number of major areas/themes within the discipline of Hispanic and Latin American studies. They will also be familiar with the use of key concepts and methods, with the use of primary sources, and with a wide range of secondary sources, both in English.

Teaching Information

Lectures, Blackboard e-learning exercises and activities, and optional seminars.

Assessment Information

1500 word essay 50% Exam 50%.

Reading and References

A variety of literary, historical and cultural texts, dependent on the expertise of the staff available in any one year. Students will be informed of each year's set reading (texts in English translation from the original Spanish) following confirmation of acceptance of their place at the University online.
