Unit Information

This unit focuses on trainees' development of teaching and learning in their specialist subject practice. It is both university and school based, allowing trainees to consider the theoretical underpinnings of learning and teaching their subject and then to put these ideas into practice in secondary schools. It provides the basis of practical experience on which trainees' professional development can be built through their developing careers. Trainees observe good practice and consider how to implement ideas from this into their own practice. The unit supports the development of their skills in planning, teaching and evaluating lessons. It helps them develop their skills in assessment of pupils' learning and in using that assessment to inform their teaching. It supports them in considering how to use their existing subject knowledge effectively and in understanding pupils' different ways of understanding.

Aims:

This unit aims to support the practical development of key professional skills. It will enable trainees to begin their development into reflective professionals who will be motivated to continue developing their skills and understanding throughout their careers. It aims to support the development of their own professional identities as teachers through working with a range of active practitioners. It will provide them with opportunities to develop their skills in planning, teaching and evaluating lessons, as well as assessing pupils learning and acting on the knowledge gained through that assessment. It will enable them to use a range of research a professional literature to inform their own practice.

Your learning on this unit

Upon successful completion of this unit trainees will be able to:

  • Plan, teach and evaluate lessons in their specialist subject;
  • Assess pupils' learning and use this assessment to inform their future teaching;
  • Communicate with pupils and use their subject knowledge effectively;
  • Draw on research into teaching of their subject to improve their teaching;
  • Understand key educational issues which arise in their experiences.

How you will learn

The programme lead will introduce the unit, assessment and intended learning outcomes. This be further supplemented by both University and School subject specialists through seminars, observations, workshops and tutorials.

How you will be assessed

Students will carry out a range of formative activities during the year which will provide feedback on the key issues addressed by this unit. They will then complete a summative assessment task, drawing on their experiences. This will include documentation of planning, teaching and evaluation activities to illustrate their skills in a chosen context. The task will be the equivalent of a 4000 word assignment, but will take a variety of formats according to the varying needs of the different subjects.

They will also be required to achieve a satisfactory standard in their practical teaching. This will be assessed through observations by tutors during school-based placements.

Resources

If this unit has a Resource List, you will normally find a link to it in the Blackboard area for the unit. Sometimes there will be a separate link for each weekly topic.

If you are unable to access a list through Blackboard, you can also find it via the Resource Lists homepage. Search for the list by the unit name or code (e.g. EDUCM0073).

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

See the Faculty workload statement relating to this unit for more information.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
