Unit Information

This unit aims to deliver a comprehensive coverage of key topics related to adult cardiac and valve disease, including diagnosis of disorders and integration of pathophysiology with clinical management. Ongoing clinical and pre-clinical and translational research examples will be presented to illustrate the current understanding and progress of in the treatment of heart and valve diseases. In addition, methods utilised to assess the effectiveness of newly proposed cardioprotective interventions during cardiac surgery will be outlined

Your learning on this unit

Students successfully completing this module will be able to:

• Describe the diseases of the heart and the valves commonly seen in adults.
• Explain the causes, progression and management of adult heart failure and valve disease.
• Discuss the ongoing pre-clinical and translational research related to heart failure and valve disease.
• Discuss advances in therapeutic cardioprotective interventions during adult cardiac surgery.
• Understand the impact of recent advances in technology in the treatment of heart failure and valve disease.

How you will be assessed

Coursework (contributing a total of 60% to the unit) consisting of:

• 5 sets of multiple choice questions (MCQs) of a simple format (select best answer from 4 or 5 options), contributing 10% to the unit.
• 1 essay (1500 words), contributing 25% to the unit.
• 1 short answers (750 words), contributing 12.5% to the unit.
• Journal paper presentation on a unit relevant topic, contributing 12.5% to the unit.

Please note that students will be given formative feedback on all coursework assessment.

Written exams consisting of:

• Essay paper contributing 40% to the unit.

How much time the unit requires
Each credit equates to 10 hours of total student input. For example a 20 credit unit will take you 200 hours of study to complete. Your total learning time is made up of contact time, directed learning tasks, independent learning and assessment activity.

Assessment
The Board of Examiners will consider all cases where students have failed or not completed the assessments required for credit. The Board considers each student's outcomes across all the units which contribute to each year's programme of study. If you have self-certificated your absence from an assessment, you will normally be required to complete it the next time it runs (this is usually in the next assessment period).
The Board of Examiners will take into account any extenuating circumstances and operates within the Regulations and Code of Practice for Taught Programmes.
