Description including Unit Aims

Aims: To facilitate the continued development of personal and professional skills appropriate for a student who is potentially eligible for a place on one of the clinical professional programmes

- To develop an understanding of learning processes and individual learning approaches and styles - To encourage competent learning and the identification of individual learning needs - To provide support for students as they address their learning needs and learn to balance both study and external demands - To develop skills in the recording, organisation and management of information - To encourage students to work independently and to take responsibility for their learning - To support students within work experience placements in their chosen clinical profession. Students will have the opportunity to experience work placements in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary medicine early in TB1 and may transfer within the Gateway programmes if they wish. - To help students recognise their own physical and emotional needs and their responses to stress - To promote communication and social competence

To facilitate a commitment to ethical and professional behaviour

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the unit the students will be able to:

  1. to communicate effectively
  2. to develop the individual skills and processes required to learn effectively
  3. to understand and demonstrate appropriate professional and ethical responsibility
  4. to be able to collaborate and work effectively in single-discipline and multi-disciplinary teams
  5. to be able to engage with and assess the opportunities provided in the work placement programme
  6. to successfully integrate skills acquired in work experience placements with academic skills
  7. to reflect upon and show insight into own personal, academic and professional development over time

Assessment Information

Attendance will be monitored and is mandatory at all teaching and assessment sessions.

Completion of a personal ePortfolio: this will contain assessed diary and reflective entries about engagement with both the programme and the work placement programme (one entry (diary / reflection) expected per fortnight) and individual personal and professional development, teamwork and communication with others and the use of media in a healthcare context (10% of total mark as per summative assessments below). (1-7)

Formative assessments will include:

- online assessments relevant to the required reading (1-7) - assessment of learning styles e.g. VAK (2) - regular review and discussion of ePortfolio entries (1-7)

Summative assessments will include:

- completion of and engagement with the ePortfolio programme (10%) (1-7) - one joint 30 minute presentation about professionalism and ethical responsibility in the provision of healthcare (20%) (1, 3, 4) - one essay question (1500 words) about the recognition and management of anxiety and / or stress (35%) (1, 2, 5-7) - one 90 minute closed book exam (combined e-assessment / short answer question paper) (35%) (1-3, 5-7)

Reading and References

The final detail of this section is yet to be confirmed as care needs to be taken to ensure that contemporary resources are supplied appropriate to the cohort. However, the content of the reading materials / references will cover the following topics among others:

  • learning styles and approaches
  • the development of study skills
  • anxiety and stress: recognition and management in self and others
  • interpersonal skills
  • the ethics of healthcare (consent, confidentiality, safeguarding, social media etc)
  • professionalism with respect to dentistry, medicine and veterinary sciences
  • the role of health professionals
