Description including Unit Aims

An overview of manufacturing processes and information to select appropriate methods for aircraft component manufacture and the development of understanding and analysis of material failure. Enhancement of finite element analysis capability using line and surface elements and application of structural mechanics to light aircraft structures.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the unit the student will be able to: • understand basic manufacturing processes and be able to research necessary information to trade-off the pros and cons of different methods for different aircraft component applications. • understand material failure, how it relates to engineering design and make simple estimates for strength or life prediction. • be able to analyse composite laminates using classical laminate analysis and failure theories. • be able to create representative 3D finite element structural models including beam elements, shells, spring supports and joints, perform linear analyses and interpret results using professional finite element analysis software. • be able to apply basic structural mechanics (Bredht-Batho equation) and analyse multicell light aircraft structures.

Assessment Information

20% - Assessed Coursework on light aircraft structures and Finite element analysis. 80% - 3 Hour examination in May/June, 5 questions to be answered out of 7 (must include one question on manufacturing).
